At the extravagant International Kolkata Book Fair, stories welcome the readers even before turning the pages of the literary archives. Nine gates and nine stories greet every bibliophile with a subtle touch of nostalgia. The entrances are not mere thresholds but prelude to literature, an anecdote of the past. Each arch carries a memory , speaks a volume through its stories and names of stalwarts of the literary world.
A promise of peace is symbolized by the Sampriti Toron, Gate No. 1. It welcomes visitors with the idea that books act as bridges and that differences become less apparent as pages open together.

Gate 2 honours Pratul Mukhopadhyay, whose enchanting songs once carried protest and tenderness in equal measure. An invisible melody lingers through the entrance reminding passers-by that words often travel first as song, then as thought.

Gate 3 recalls a significant chronicler of social conscience. The door feels like a pathway/ passage towards social realism, where literature doesn't symbolise euphoria but reality.

Gate 4 opens towards Buenos Aires, with the Metropolitan Cathedral as its image. It embodies the spirit of Argentina, the focal theme country, bringing a distant skyline into Kolkata’s winter afternoon. Here, geography folds into narrative.

Gate 5 carries forward the Argentine journey through the National Historical Museum of Buenos Aires. This gate portrays , that nations, like journals, are built from layered histories and carefully preserved voices.

The fair is returned to its native tongue through Gate 6, the Biswa Bangla Gate. Bengal's craft, script, and inventiveness are honored.
Gates 7 and 8, both, talk about education and youth. Students, volunteers, and first-time readers own these twin entrances; they are the ones who will inherit the shelves in the future.
Last but not the last, Gate 9 bears the name of Shailajananda Mukhopadhyay, a teacher-writer who believed in clarity and compassion. This last gate feels reflective, as if inviting visitors to pause before stepping into the crowd.
When combined, the nine gates provide more than just motion. They craft an encounter. They explain that attending a book fair is about more than just purchasing books; it's about breaking past specific barriers to enter a republic of ideas.
