The 2025 International Kolkata Book Fair (IKBF) witnessed a thought-provoking session titled “The Residence of Business—Bengal”, challenging the stereotype that Bengalis lack business acumen. Moderated by Tridip Kumar Chatterjee,General Secretary of the Publishers & Booksellers Guild, the session featured industry stalwarts who have shaped the Bengali business landscape globally. The program commenced with an energetic performance by the Kolkata Youth Ensemble, setting an engaging tone for the discussion. Held at the Karunamoyee Mela Ground, Salt Lake, the session resonated deeply with the audience.

Panelists included Sri Satyam Roychowdhury, Managing Director Techno India Group and Chancellor Sister Nivedita University; Sri Subhra Chandra, Joint MD of PC Chandra Jewellers; Sri Shiladitya Choudhuri, Founder-Director of Oudh 1590 and MD of Sagittarius Communication; and Sri Pratik Chandra, fourth-generation leader of Mukharochak. “We all look for employment, but these people have created employment,” remarked Chatterjee, setting the tone for an engaging discussion.

Satyam Roychowdhury shared his journey of founding Techno India Group, which began with “one chair, one table, and a single computer.” He humorously recalled, “I advertised a hostel before I even secured accommodation.” Subhra Chandra highlighted 85 years of PC Chandra Jewellers, attributing success to “integrity and patience.” Pratik Chandra reflected on Mukharochak’s growth, stating, “From a small snack shop, we’ve now reached global shelves.” Shiladitya Choudhuri discussed his transition from aspiring music director to restaurateur, announcing, “We are now taking Oudh 1590 to Houston, USA.”

A spirited exchange on delegation followed, with Roychowdhury stating, “If I don’t go to the office for four days, I won’t even get a call. TIG is a well oiled machine with a vision inspired with the thought of global good and a discipline that is at the core of the value system of the group. The system is in place takes care of everything.” The discussion reinforced that Bengali entrepreneurs are breaking stereotypes, proving their business acumen through resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Their stories serve as inspiration for the next generation, showing that business success is not just about resources but about vision, adaptability, and perseverance.
