India’s roots delve deep in two things - Literature and Agriculture. Agriculture is the backbone of India’s economy, providing employment to over 45.76% of the population according to PLFS. With time advancing, technologies have been advancing as well, which gives us better results of food growth in our country. At the International Kolkata Book Fair, there is a particular stall which is narrating all the tales of importance of agriculture and how does it matter in our lives. The impact of agriculture in people’s lives makes it very evident why it has become a part of the ‘book fair’ since the past 3 years. Even though they don’t provide anything for sale, the knowledge they are providing for free is priceless.

“Susthayee Krishi Poribaar is a consortium built especially for farmers from every sector so that they can gather under one roof”, said Mr. Jayanku. They have held multiple conventions in different places all over West Bengal such as, Sundarban, Raiganj, North Bengal, etc. Their motive for holding these conventions were to make people aware of healthy and unhealthy food habits.

West Bengal government gave 34 farmer groups from diverse fields an opportunity to keep their farm products on display at the Agrimarket Building at Rajarhat, Newtown. The farm products were both processed and unprocessed goods. Starting from freshly plucked vegetables and fruits from the fields to freshly packed jaggery, pickles, sauces, etc., are exhibited.

Once their roots held onto the soil tight, they started publishing a tabloid to let out their branches of knowledge out to the people known as “Susthayee Krishi Kotha”. This made their awareness programme even successful as it reached more people. “We are trying to make people aware about agriculture, even if it is not possible for people in Newtown to practice farming. But if they are aware, they will make their eating preferences known to their local stores. They will let farmers know what the demand is”, he explained further about the need for the tabloid to reach the public. He also mentioned facts like how eating non seasonal vegetables and fruits harm our bodies because of all the chemicals used to grow them unnaturally are also explained in details in their tabloids to pursue people into leading a healthy life.

By getting to know what this stall stands by should make us realise how important this is on the grounds of IKBF which is the centre of knowledge.
