The International Kolkata Book Fair is not just a grand celebration of books, but a boat sailing through nostalgia, where generations float and find immortality year after year. As the fair marks its 48th edition, Mohiner Ghoraguli, the iconic Bengali band, plays a pivotal role in this nostalgic voyage, celebrating half a century of musical brilliance.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the legendary Bengali band Mohiner Ghoraguli. The journey of this band, which started in 1975 with a vision to create original Bengali music, has been intricately linked to the Kolkata Book Fair. The band's dedication to presenting their music to the people saw a significant milestone in 1995, when their notations, leaflets, and lyrics were officially published at the Kolkata Book Fair, further cementing the bond between the band and the event. In this year’s edition of the fair, four young performers—Swastik Chakraborty, Ankur Biswas, Spandan Bose, and Upayan Maitra—have come together to perform Mohiner Ghoraguli's songs under the open sky. Accompanied by minimal musical instruments, they bring alive five timeless hits from the band’s illustrious repertoire, including "Dhandher Thekeo Jotil Tumi", "Shono Sudhijon", "Kotha Diya Bandhu", and *"Amar Priya Cafe Gay"*. The open-air performance ends with the iconic *"Hay Bhalobashi"*, a song that resonates deeply with the hearts of many.
When asked about the reason behind celebrating Mohiner Ghoraguli, Swastik Chakraborty, the lead vocalist of the group, said, "We want to spread the essence of Mohiner Ghoraguli’s original Bengali music to the new generation. Just as we, today’s youth, have fallen in love with Mohiner Ghoraguli, we hope that those who are not familiar with their music will discover it through our efforts." Ankur Biswas, the percussionist, added, "One of Mohiner Ghoraguli’s key goals was to make music with friends, and we’ve adopted that spirit. It’s an extraordinary thought process that resonates with us. Through this performance, we’re also paying tribute to the band."
The idea of carrying forward a legacy has no definitive definition for these four performers. However, they believe that music speaks about time, reflection, and eternal thoughts. Therefore, celebrating Mohiner Ghoraguli at the Kolkata Book Fair is not merely about paying tribute, but also about imprinting their timeless message onto the new generation and pleading to nurture it for years to come.
