The first Sunday of the 48th International Kolkata Book Fair at Boimela Prangan, Karunamoyee, Salt Lake coincided with Saraswati Puja, creating a unique blend of literary enthusiasm and festive spirit. Dressed in traditional yellow, students and families thronged the fairground, balancing their celebrations with book hunting.
With Saraswati Puja dedicated to the Goddess of Knowledge, the fair became the perfect venue to celebrate learning. Many visitors eagerly explored book stalls, with publishers noting increased demand for academic, competitive exam materials, and literature focused on knowledge and wisdom. “We’ve seen a remarkable spike in sales, especially in academic and philosophical books,” said a bookseller at the fair.

Books on Bengali literature, modern fiction, and educational texts saw significant interest. “Students and young readers have been particularly drawn to books that enhance their knowledge,” noted, a representative of a major publishing house. Discussions on literature and reading habits added to the day’s intellectual atmosphere. Organizers recorded an exceptional turnout, with bibliophiles making the most of the coinciding events. “The combination of Saraswati Puja and the book fair has truly amplified the energy here,” stated an event coordinator.

The Publishers and Booksellers Guild, as every year, celebrated Children’s Day at the Book Fair by gifting free books to toddlers and young readers. The air was filled with laughter and excitement as little hands clutched their first stories, their eyes widening with wonder at the worlds waiting to be explored. "Seeing the joy in the children's eyes and the gratitude of their parents is truly heartwarming. We feel privileged to spread the love of books and knowledge every year," said Sudhangshu Sekhar Dey, President of the Publishers and Booksellers Guild.

As evening fell, the day ended with book signings, panel discussions, and literary readings, making this Sunday a memorable one for all.
With the book fair continuing, this day set the tone for the coming festivities, reinforcing Kolkata’s love for literature and culture.
